Wrong Way

This poor Junco. He just flew the wrong way and ended up slamming into our sliding glass door that faces the lake. This actually happens quite often during the winter months, but every time it does happen, I feel really bad.

This little guy was actually just sitting there near our door. I could see movement in his body, but barely. As I watched the bird for five minutes, Annabelle was meowing and pawing at the window. In her mind, this creature meant playtime.

I slowly opened the door and approached the bird, which still wasn't moving much at this point. After a couple minutes I scooped the bird up in my hand and gently stroked it's head. The bird seemed to respond by opening up his eyes and looking around. I talked to the bird for a little while and it seemed to be perking up.

As you can see I couldn't help but snap a picture . Well, after about 45 minutes I checked on the bird and he was still just sitting there, eyes open wide. After turning my back for a minute, I looked back and the bird was gone.....he flew away. Just like that.

Birds are funny creatures. Sometimes a bird will hit the window and wham, it's instantly dead. Other times like today, it hits the window and just seems to be stunned for a while.....kind of like being knocked out.

I'm glad the outcome of this bird's ordeal was a good one. I love birds.

  1. Lisa.....I was praying that the little bird would be OK....
You know I am such a softie for animals...(and people) in distress.
That is such a sweet photo...and I would have love to have held the wren.
It happens here a lot too....birds flying into windows and sliding glass doors. Miraculously, most of them are OK after a while....it stuns them...and they don't move for ever so long. I'm glad you gave it tender loving care.
You are a sweet person. One who cares for others....the world needs more people like you.
    Love,
    Jackie

  4. Same thing happend to me this fall.
I was talking on the phone and BAM! A bird hit the window and fell to the ground. It was stunned for about 20 min, slowly getting up on it's feet and after another 15min finally flew away. Amazing that they can occasionally survive such a blow.

  5. Last summer a bird hit my Dad's window and he actually called me and asked me to come get it and take care of it. He didn't want to feel guilty if it died on his property. I didn't and the bird eventually flew away.
